Sexually transmitted diseases and the importance of home test kits

1. What are STIs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) are infections that are mainly transmitted through sexual contact. They represent a significant health problem and are highly prevalent in Germany. STIs can include various pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. It is important to be informed about these diseases in order to control their spread and prevent possible long-term health effects.

2. The most common STIs in Germany

  • Chlamydia : Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Germany and worldwide. In Germany, chlamydia infections are not reportable. There are therefore only estimates of the number of new infections. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) assumes that there are around 300,000 new cases in Germany every year. The infection is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The prevalence of chlamydia is particularly high among young people. Chlamydia often causes no obvious symptoms (asymptomatic course), but if left untreated it can lead to serious complications, such as infertility in women. You can find more information in our guide article on chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae . Infection affects the genitals, mouth and anus. Symptoms can include painful urination, discharge and inflammation. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to serious complications, including infertility . For more information, see our advice article on gonorrhea .
  • Trichomonads ( trichomoniasis ) : Trichomonads are single-cell parasites that can cause an infection in the genital area (infect the mucous membranes in the urethra and vagina) . An infection in men is often not noticed due to the "lack" of symptoms. In women, however , the situation is different: Typical symptoms are pain when urinating and a noticeable discharge from the vagina. If the infection is not treated, it can lead to infertility in women.
  • Mycoplasma genitalium: Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that can cause infections in the genital area. It often causes no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to inflammation and complications such as infertility.
  • Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum: These types of bacteria can also cause infections in the genital area. They can lead to inflammation and increase the risk of complications.

    3. Prevention and importance of home tests

Preventing STIs is crucial to limiting their spread. Safer sex practices such as using condoms and reducing the number of sexual partners can reduce the risk of infection. In addition, regular sexual health screening with urine or blood tests is a useful way to detect and treat infections early.

Home tests are playing an increasingly important role in the early detection of STIs. DoctorBox offers home test kits such as the " STI Pro " and " STI Standard " that cover a wide range of different sexually transmitted infections.
