Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect both men and women and can cause a variety of symptoms and effects. It is important to note that not everyone who has an STI will necessarily develop symptoms. Symptoms can also vary in severity from person to person. The symptoms listed below can also be attributed to other health problems. For this reason, it is recommended that you get STI tests done regularly.
1. Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) – symptoms and effects:
Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) are a group of bacteria that can cause various infections in the urinary and genital tract. Types D-K in particular are specifically responsible for chlamydia infections in this area. These infections manifest themselves, for example, as inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or inflammation of the ureter (urethritis) with symptoms such as burning when urinating or discharge.
In men: Typical symptoms in men are pain when urinating and abnormal discharge from the penis. If the infection is left untreated, the bacteria can spread and cause inflammation of the prostate or the internal female reproductive organs, which can ultimately lead to infertility. In addition, so-called swimming pool conjunctivitis can occur, an inflammation of the conjunctiva that can be transmitted through contact with water.
In women: The infection often occurs without any obvious symptoms in women, which is why they can be carriers without realizing it. Such an infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as the unborn child can be harmed. Another form of chlamydia, namely types L1-L3, leads to the sexually transmitted disease "lymphogranuloma inguinale". This disease manifests itself in swollen lymph nodes in the groin area and occurs primarily in tropical and subtropical regions.
2. Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) – symptoms and effects:
The sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, which is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, manifests itself in various symptoms and effects that vary depending on gender.
In men: During the acute phase, about 2-7 days after infection, men may experience symptoms such as urethritis. This is characterized by itching, purulent discharge, painful urination and frequent urination. However, some men may not notice any symptoms for up to a month. If the infection is left untreated, there is a risk of inflammation of the prostate in the chronic phase.
In women: In women, the infection can also occur without symptoms, meaning that the disease can remain undetected for a long time. Alternatively, local inflammatory reactions can occur that affect the bladder or female sexual organs such as the ovaries. In the worst case, such inflammations can lead to infertility.
3. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
The acute infection often goes undetected because it causes no symptoms or non-specific flu-like symptoms in both men and women. If left untreated, a silent phase of the disease lasts for years. This later develops into the symptomatic stage of AIDS, which manifests itself as a severe impairment of the immune system in both men and women. The resulting infections can affect various organs.
4. Hepatitis C
During the initial infection, both men and women often have mild or no symptoms for 4 – 12 weeks after infection.
Occasionally, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, abdominal pain and yellow skin may occur. The virus remains in the liver of most people who are initially infected and later leads to a chronic infection that usually does not cause any significant symptoms. Over many years, however, it can lead to liver disease and, as a complication, to cirrhosis, in which the liver gradually loses its function.
5. Syphilis (Lues)
About 2-3 weeks after infection with syphilis, both men and women may experience swelling of the lymph nodes in the genital area. This is often accompanied by painless lesions of the mucous membranes of the genitals, which usually heal on their own.
During vaginal intercourse, these injuries can occur on the penis, labia, or vagina. During oral sex, mucous membrane injuries in the mouth or throat are possible, while during anal sex, the rectum may be affected. In later stages of the infection, a rash may appear on the hands and feet. If the infection is left untreated, it can stay in the body for years and damage all organs.
Such an infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as it can cause serious harm to the unborn child.
There are several arguments in favor of performing the STI Standard. The STI Standard tests your urine and blood sample for 5 common STIs:
- Discretion: The STI Standard offers you the opportunity to check your sexual health in a private environment. In addition, the home test does not require you to answer any uncomfortable and sensitive questions.
- Convenient: The STI Standard can be ordered online and will be delivered directly and discreetly to your home. You can carry out the sampling from the comfort of your own home without having to make an appointment.
- Early detection: Most STIs can cause serious health problems if left untreated. The STI Standard can help detect STIs early, before serious complications arise.
- Protect your partner/sexual environment: If you suspect that you have contracted an STI, the STI Standard can provide clarity. You will receive your test result within a few days and have clarity. Protect yourself and your partner. Regular and early testing can help reduce the spread of STIs in the population as a whole.
Important: If the test result is positive, please consult a doctor for further clarification and diagnosis .
The STI Standard tests for the following 5 sexually transmitted diseases using a urine and blood sample:
- Gonorrhea (clap)
- Chlamydia
- HIV (via screening test)
- Hepatitis C (via screening test)
- Syphilis (Lues) (via screening test)
Important: Please note that no confirmatory diagnostics are carried out for the pathogens mentioned, which are detected by screening tests. If the result is positive, please consult a doctor for further clarification and to discuss the results with them.
The STI Standard sampling kit is a simple and convenient combination test (urine and blood sample) for at home. We have integrated a user-friendly urine and blood collection kit that allows easy sampling regardless of gender.
You then send the samples to our specialist laboratory in the enclosed protective and shipping bag. The laboratory checks your sample material using PCR and screening tests for: gonorrhea (the clap), chlamydia, HIV (screening test), hepatitis C (screening test) and syphilis (lues) (screening test).
After three to seven days, you will receive your results in your DoctorBox app. Note: Pay attention to the timing when taking the sample.
Important: If you have been infected with an STI, it usually takes 3-6 weeks for the pathogens to be detectable in the urine or blood. This period is called the incubation period. If you have an acute suspicion that you have been infected through sexual intercourse (risky contact), please contact a doctor immediately.
For the STI standard, you send in a urine and a blood sample. For the urine sample, PCR diagnostics are used, a fast and highly sensitive laboratory procedure for detecting chlamydia and gonorrhea.
The blood sample is needed to detect HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C. So-called screening tests are used for all three infections.
These are diagnostic tests that aim to identify all people who are affected by a particular disease or who have certain characteristics (e.g. antibodies) with a relatively low expenditure of time and material.
Screening tests have a high sensitivity but a relatively low specificity. This means that some people will inevitably test false positive. Therefore, a positive screening test is usually followed by a confirmatory test that has a high specificity.
Important: No confirmatory diagnostics are carried out as part of the STI standard. In the event of a positive or reactive screening test, please consult a registered doctor to have the result confirmed or refuted.
You can find the instructions for use here:
If your test result is positive, you have the option of booking a video consultation via DoctorBox to get a suitable antibiotic prescribed. This offer is only valid for the following infections:
- Chlamydia
- gonorrhea
The booking tool for the video consultation appears directly below your positive result in the app. You can find a detailed description of the process in the widget.
No. In the video consultation, a prescription cannot be issued for all infections. Some conditions—such as gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, or hepatitis C—are too complex for online treatment and require referral to a specialist.
