Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect both men and women and can cause a variety of symptoms and effects. It is important to note that not everyone who has an STI will necessarily develop symptoms. Symptoms can also vary in severity from person to person. The symptoms listed below can also be attributed to other health problems. For this reason, it is recommended that you get STI tests done regularly.
1. Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) – symptoms and effects:
Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) are a group of bacteria that can cause various infections in the urinary and genital tract. Types D-K in particular are specifically responsible for chlamydia infections in this area. These infections manifest themselves, for example, as inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or inflammation of the ureter (urethritis) with symptoms such as burning when urinating or discharge.
In men: Typical symptoms in men are pain when urinating and abnormal discharge from the penis. If the infection is left untreated, the bacteria can spread and cause inflammation of the prostate or the internal female reproductive organs, which can ultimately lead to infertility. In addition, so-called swimming pool conjunctivitis can occur, an inflammation of the conjunctiva that can be transmitted through contact with water.
In women: The infection often occurs without any obvious symptoms in women, which is why they can be carriers without realizing it. Such an infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as the unborn child can be harmed. Another form of chlamydia, namely types L1-L3, leads to the sexually transmitted disease "lymphogranuloma inguinale". This disease manifests itself in swollen lymph nodes in the groin area and occurs primarily in tropical and subtropical regions.
2. Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) – symptoms and effects:
The sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, which is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, manifests itself in various symptoms and effects that vary depending on gender.
In men: During the acute phase, about 2-7 days after infection, men may experience symptoms such as urethritis. This is characterized by itching, purulent discharge, painful urination and frequent urination. However, some men may not notice any symptoms for up to a month. If the infection is left untreated, there is a risk of inflammation of the prostate in the chronic phase.
In women: In women, the infection can also occur without symptoms, meaning that the disease can remain undetected for a long time. Alternatively, local inflammatory reactions can occur that affect the bladder or female sexual organs such as the ovaries. In the worst case, such inflammations can lead to infertility.
3. Trichomonads (Trichomonas vaginalis) – symptoms and effects:
Trichomonads are microorganisms that cause a sexually transmitted disease. Surprisingly, most people infected with Trichomonas vaginalis remain asymptomatic and the infection can go undetected for years.
In women and men: Trichomoniasis affects both women and men, although symptoms are more common in women. Symptoms can appear within 5 to 28 days after infection. Typical symptoms include pain, burning or itching in the vagina (vaginitis), urethra (urethritis) or penis. There may also be an unpleasant-smelling, thin vaginal discharge. Symptoms in both sexes can be more severe during intercourse and urination.
4. Mycoplasma genitalium – symptoms and effects:
The infection causes inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) in both men and women, which is accompanied by mucous-purulent discharge from the urinary tract and painful urination.
In women: In women, the infection can also cause inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) and the internal genital organs. This inflammation can lead to infertility in the long term.
5. Mycoplasma hominis – symptoms and effects:
Infection with Mycoplasma hominis mainly causes inflammation of the ureter (urethritis). It has also been linked to potential effects on male fertility. In women, it can cause inflammation of the vagina (vaginosis) or cervix (cervicitis).
6. Ureaplasma parvum – symptoms and effects:
In rare cases, Ureaplasma parvum can cause invasive infections of the urinary and genital area. These manifest as inflammation of the ureter (urethritis). However, Ureaplasma parvum has also been found in many healthy men.
7. Ureaplasma urealyticum – symptoms and effects :
An infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum can cause various diseases in the urinary and genital area. These manifest themselves with symptoms that vary depending on gender:
In women: The infection can cause inflammation of the urinary tract (urethritis), bacterial vaginosis and inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) in women.
In men: In men, however, inflammation of the urinary tract (urethritis) or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) can occur.
A characteristic symptom associated with this infection is the so-called "fishy" odor, which occurs in both women and men. This odor occurs due to the bacteria's ability to break down urea. Timely detection and appropriate treatment of Ureaplasma urealyticum infections play an essential role in minimizing potential complications and protecting health.
8. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
The acute infection often goes undetected because it causes no symptoms or non-specific flu-like symptoms in both men and women. If left untreated, a silent phase of the disease lasts for years. This later develops into the symptomatic stage of AIDS, which manifests itself as a severe impairment of the immune system in both men and women. The resulting infections can affect various organs.
9. Hepatitis C
During the initial infection, both men and women often have mild or no symptoms for 4 – 12 weeks after infection.
Occasionally, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, abdominal pain and yellow skin may occur. The virus remains in the liver of most people who are initially infected and later leads to a chronic infection that usually does not cause any significant symptoms. Over many years, however, it can lead to liver disease and, as a complication, to cirrhosis, in which the liver gradually loses its function.
10. Syphilis
About 2-3 weeks after infection with syphilis, both men and women may experience swelling of the lymph nodes in the genital area. This is often accompanied by painless lesions of the mucous membranes of the genitals, which usually heal on their own.
During vaginal intercourse, these injuries can occur on the penis, labia, or vagina. During oral sex, mucous membrane injuries in the mouth or throat are possible, while during anal sex, the rectum may be affected. In later stages of the infection, a rash may appear on the hands and feet. If the infection is left untreated, it can stay in the body for years and damage all organs.
Such an infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as it can cause serious harm to the unborn child.

The STI Pro sampling kit is a simple and convenient combination test (urine and blood sample) for at home. We have integrated a user-friendly urine and blood sampling kit that allows easy sampling regardless of gender. You then send the samples to our specialist laboratory in the enclosed protective and shipping bag.
The laboratory checks your sample material using PCR and screening tests for: gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonads, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum, Ureaplasma urealyticum, HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis (lues). After three to seven days, you will receive your result in your DoctorBox app.
Note: Pay attention to the timing when taking the sample. If you have been infected with an STI, it usually takes up to 3-6 weeks for the pathogens to be detectable in the urine or blood. This period is called the incubation period. If you have an acute suspicion that you have been infected through sexual intercourse (risky contact), please see a doctor immediately for further clarification.
No. In the video consultation, a prescription cannot be issued for all infections. Some conditions—such as gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, or hepatitis C—are too complex for online treatment and require referral to a specialist.
With STI Pro you send in a urine and a blood sample.
PCR diagnostics are used for the urine sample, a rapid and highly sensitive laboratory procedure for the detection of chlamydia and gonorrhea (clap), trichomonads, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum, Ureaplasma urealyticum.
The blood sample is required to detect HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C. Screening tests are used for all three infections. These are diagnostic tests that aim to identify all people who are affected by a certain disease or who have certain characteristics (e.g. antibodies) with a relatively short time and material outlay.
Screening tests have a high sensitivity but a relatively low specificity. This means that some people will inevitably test false positive. Therefore, a positive screening test is usually followed by a confirmatory test that has a high specificity.
Important: No confirmatory diagnostics are carried out as part of the STI Pro. In the event of a positive or reactive screening test, please consult a registered doctor to have the result confirmed or refuted.
If your test result is positive, you have the option of booking a video consultation via DoctorBox to get a suitable antibiotic prescribed. This offer only applies to the following infections:
- Chlamydia
- gonorrhea
- Trichomonads
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Mycoplasma hominis
