Do I no longer need a colonoscopy if I take this test?
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for detecting colon cancer. The ColoAlert test does not replace a colonoscopy.
ColoAlert is a highly sensitive combination stool test with 4 biomarkers, making it an advanced colon cancer screening test. In addition to detecting occult blood in the stool, it also identifies human DNA and the genetic markers KRAS and BRAF, thereby increasing sensitivity and specificity compared to an iFOBT for detecting colon cancer and its precursors.
Who is the ColoAlert stool test suitable for as a preventive method?
ColoAlert is generally suitable for individuals aged 45 and older. Acceptance of screening methods like the ColoAlert test is increasing in the population, especially compared to occult blood tests (iFOBTs). In certain cases—such as when additional risk factors are present—it may also be appropriate outside this age range after consulting your doctor.
ColoAlert is not suitable for people with irritable bowel syndrome, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, or with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).
What does the ColoAlert stool test sample get analyzed for in the lab?
With ColoAlert, in addition to detecting occult blood, three other tumor markers are analyzed. The molecular genetic analysis examines the stool sample for suspiciously high levels of human DNA and genetic mutations. The diagnostics company Mainz Biomed develops and optimizes tests for the early detection of colon cancer to increase the efficiency and user-friendliness of screening tests. These additional features increase the detection rate for colon cancer, known as sensitivity (the proportion of positive test results among those affected).
Has the ColoAlert stool test undergone clinical studies?
All testing methods have a certain margin of error. In diagnostics, this is expressed as sensitivity (the proportion of true positive results) and specificity (the proportion of true negative results). According to several independent clinical studies, the sensitivity of the ColoAlert colorectal cancer test (Combined DNA stool assay) is 85%, and the specificity is 92%. Mainz Biomed, the company behind ColoAlert, has developed the test with advanced features to optimize user-friendliness and screening efficiency.
KRAS/BRAF: What are these markers? What do they indicate?
KRAS and BRAF are genes that regulate cell growth. If a mutation occurs here, the rate of cell division becomes disrupted. This can lead to partially uncontrolled growth, which over time may develop into cancer.
These markers have been known and described in scientific literature for some time.
Changes in KRAS and BRAF can be detected even in early stages of cancer or its precursors.
Will health insurance cover the cost?
Private health insurance typically covers the cost. So far, we are not aware of any cases where coverage has been denied.
However, we cannot guarantee 100% coverage.
For public health insurance, we recommend submitting an individual request for reimbursement.
How often should the test be repeated?
Current research suggests repeating ColoAlert every 3 years. This recommendation follows the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) guidance regarding ColoGuard. The interval makes sense, as the stage of colon cancer typically changes about every three years. For high-risk patients, monitoring should be more frequent. In these cases, regular colonoscopies are also recommended.
Do medications affect this test?
Based on current experience, medications have no effect on the test parameters.
Manufacturers of the occult blood test do not specify any restrictions.
What dietary considerations can help ensure ColoAlert is effective?
So far, there are no clear links between diet and the successful analysis of the ColoAlert test. Therefore, a special diet before sample collection is not necessary.
However, since dietary supplements are suspected to influence the test, they should be discontinued for seven days before collecting the sample.
