Symptoms

An elevated HbA1c level can indicate impaired blood sugar control and may be associated with various symptoms and health problems:

  • Polyuria (excessive urge to urinate): High blood sugar levels can cause the kidneys to excrete more water, resulting in frequent urination.
  • Polydipsia (excessive thirst): Increased urination often causes you to feel very thirsty. Fatigue: High blood sugar levels can prevent the body from converting glucose into energy efficiently, which can lead to general fatigue.
  • Weight loss : In some people, high blood sugar levels can cause weight loss as the body tries to excrete excess glucose through urine.
  • Susceptibility to infections : High blood sugar can affect the immune system and increase susceptibility to infections.

It is important to note that some people with elevated HbA1c may not have any obvious symptoms. In the long term, untreated high blood sugar levels can cause serious health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so regular monitoring of HbA1c is important, especially for people with risk factors for diabetes or those who already have diabetes.
