Bloating, constipation, abdominal pain… This could be IMO – a specific form of bacterial overgrowth in the gut. Many gastrointestinal complaints are nonspecific. An often overlooked cause of bloating and constipation is IMO – a specific type of intestinal dysbiosis, which is now distinguished from SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

What is IMO?
IMO (= Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth) is a microbial overgrowth of the intestine in which methane-producing microorganisms (mostly archaea) can lead to symptoms such as bloating, constipation and abdominal pain.
Methane-producing archaea
In IMO, certain microorganisms multiply excessively in the intestines. These produce methane, which can slow down intestinal motility – with typical consequences such as constipation.
Nonspecific complaints
Bloating, a distended abdomen, constipation and abdominal pain are common symptoms – however, they can have many causes, which is why IMO is often overlooked.
Difference to SIBO
IMO is now distinguished from SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) because different microorganisms are involved and the symptoms can vary.
What are the harmful consequences?
An imbalanced gut flora can impair nutrient absorption, potentially leading to vitamin, nutrient, or protein deficiencies, among other things.
Nutrient deficiencies
An imbalanced gut flora can impair the absorption of important vitamins and minerals – with possible effects on energy, immune system and well-being.
Chronic conditions
If left untreated, the symptoms can persist and permanently impair quality of life – therefore, early detection is important.
Protein deficiency
Protein utilization may also be impaired, which can affect muscle strength, regeneration, and general vitality.
Often overlooked cause
Because the symptoms are nonspecific, IMO is often not recognized – a targeted test can provide clarity here.
What can you do?
The new IMO breath test can detect bacterial overgrowth. Your breath samples are analyzed in the laboratory. The methane and CO₂ levels in your exhaled air can provide indications of methane-related bacterial overgrowth – simply, safely, and without a doctor's visit.
Simple breath test
The test measures methane and CO₂ levels in exhaled air. Elevated methane levels can be an indication of IMO.
Conveniently from home
You can easily collect breath samples at home – without a doctor's visit and without a lot of time.
Laboratory analysis
Your samples will be analyzed in our quality-assured laboratory. You will usually receive the results within 1–2 days.
